FFftAW #49 – Storm Front

FFAW week 49 challenge

This is in response to the FFAW Week 49 challenge. Thank you Louise at The Storyteller’s Abode for the photo prompt. And thanks to Priceless Joy for providing the platform to stretch my writing skills.

Ella was sitting on the damp sand, idly doodling with a stick. There was a storm coming in and the wind was blowing harder. She pulled her sweater more tightly around her.

She could feel his eyes staring at her back, willing her to come back inside, but she wasn’t ready yet. She knew she was being petty, but sometimes she thought her husband practiced being obtuse.

She had been so anxious for him to get home so she could share the good news. She had set the table with her best dishes, lit the candles, and music was playing.

The door slammed and she jumped. “What’s for dinner, honey?” Jay asked. “You wouldn’t believe . . .” His voice trailed off as he noticed the table settings and the music.

“What’s this? Were you expecting company?” he asked, quirking his eyebrow.

“No, I thought . . .” She stopped and, fighting tears, she ran out the door.

Just as the first raindrops fell, she felt his arms wrap around her. “I found the stick,” he whispered.
