FFftAW #57 – Blaster

FFfAW #55 - Soldier Dog

What happened? Where am I? Where’s Blaster?

Ashton tried to sit up but something had him pinned down. He could hear noises, but his ears were ringing so loud he couldn’t make them out. As the ringing subsided, he was able to discern one sound in particular and everything flooded back into his memory.

He and Blaster had almost finished checking buildings in the village when Blaster started pulling hard on his leash. Ashton took three steps in response and then the world went black.

“Over here!” someone shouted. Then many hands were digging frantically to get him out of the rubble and lift him onto a stretcher to be airlifted to the hospital in Kandahar.

A month later, Blaster was working with another soldier when he suddenly stopped, yanked the leash from the soldier’s hand, and took off. As the breathless soldier turned the corner of a building, he saw Ashton kneeling with his head bowed to Blaster’s whispering, “Thank you for saving my life, boy.”

This is my 168 word story for the 57th Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers, hosted by PricelessJoy. Each week we are given a photo prompt for creating our stories in approximately 75-175 words. This challenge is open to all who would like to participate.

Thanks to Pixabay.com for this week’s photo prompt.

Share Your World 2016 – Week 11

How many siblings do you have? What’s your birth order?

I am the oldest of seven children—four boys and three girls. The three oldest all have birthdays within a five-day period.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?

Most of the time I would rather be driving, but there are times I enjoy being the passenger because it gives me the chance to really see more of my surroundings. When I’m driving, I’m so concentrated on the road ahead and other drivers that I don’t notice things such as new businesses or other things in my area.

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles or turn on the flashlight? How many of each do you own?

Neither. There was a time when we kept hurricane lamps filled and at the ready, or we would use a camping lantern. Nowadays I usually have one or two battery-powered lanterns on hand, especially during hurricane season.

List at least five of your favorite types of animals?  (any animal to domestic to wild to marine life)

Oh my, I love almost all animals (snakes are a definite exception).

  1. Cats, small and large
  2. Dogs
  3. Monkeys
  4. Meerkats — I fell in love with these creatures during Animal Planet’s “Meerkat Manor” series
  5. Squirrels, chipmunks and prairie dogs — cousins all
  6. Elephants, especially the smaller Asian elephants
  7. Dolphins

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I’m grateful that, thanks to a medication change, I had more energy last week than I’ve had in a very long time, which enabled me to take some of the housekeeping load off my sister.  This week . . . I’m really looking forward to enjoying the warmer weather and spending more time outdoors—if the mosquitoes will let me.

Share Your World is hosted by Cee’s Photography. Each Monday, she asks four questions for us to answer and share, if we wish. The Bonus Question is always the same: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
